Monsters, Spells, Traps, Tribute Summons, the Battle Phase, and a ready-to-play 40-card Warrior deck.
The Three Card Types
Every card in Yu-Gi-Oh! is one of three types. The game's entire strategic depth comes from how these types interact.
Monster Cards (Yellow/Orange Border)
Your attackers and defenders. Each has an ATK and DEF value. You play them in Monster Zones in Attack Position (vertical) or Defense Position (horizontal). Has a Level (stars 1–12) that determines Tribute cost. Special Monster types include Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, Link, Ritual, and Pendulum — each with their own summoning rules.
Spell Cards (Green Border)
One-time effects placed in Spell/Trap Zones. Normal Spells activate immediately. Continuous Spells stay on the field. Equip Spells attach to a monster. Field Spells go in the Field Zone. Quick-Play Spells can activate on the opponent's turn.
Trap Cards (Pink/Purple Border)
Must be Set face-down for one full turn before activation. Activate in response to opponent's actions. Normal Traps are one-time; Continuous Traps stay active; Counter Traps can only be negated by other Counter Traps.
Monster Sub-Types
Monsters are further categorized by their Type (Warrior, Dragon, Spellcaster, etc.) and Attribute (DARK, LIGHT, FIRE, WATER, EARTH, WIND, DIVINE). These categories matter for card effects — many cards specifically search or support one Type or Attribute.
The Field and Zones
Monster Zone: 5 zones for your monsters. Standard Monsters go here.
Spell/Trap Zone: 5 zones for Spell and Trap cards, played face-up or Set face-down.
Field Zone: One zone per player, top-left. Field Spell cards go here.
Extra Monster Zone: Two zones in the center of the field, shared between players. Extra Deck monsters summoned with Link arrows or Xyz/Synchro go here unless a Link arrow points to a regular Monster Zone.
Graveyard (GY): Cards are sent here when destroyed or used. Many powerful effects trigger from or interact with the Graveyard.
Banished Zone: Cards removed from the game are placed here face-up (or sometimes face-down). Banished cards generally can't be used again unless a specific card retrieves them.
Hand: Private zone. Maximum 6 cards at End Phase (otherwise discard).
Deck (Main Deck): Your 40–60 card main library, shuffled face-down.
Extra Deck: Up to 15 Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, and Link Monsters stored separately. Summoned from here by specific means.
Turn Structure
Yu-Gi-Oh! turns are structured into six phases. Unlike most TCGs, the first player does not draw during the Draw Phase of Turn 1 (to prevent first-turn advantage).
Draw Phase: Draw one card. The first player skips this on their first turn.
Standby Phase: Trigger any effects that say "During the Standby Phase..."
Main Phase 1: The primary action phase. Normal Summon/Set one monster, activate Spells and Traps, use monster effects, Special Summon freely (within rules).
Battle Phase: Declare attacks. Each monster can attack once per turn. This phase is optional — you can skip it.
Main Phase 2: A second main phase after the Battle Phase. Good for playing Spells after combat, Xyz/Synchro summons using monsters that just attacked.
End Phase: Resolve "end of turn" effects, discard to 6 if hand size exceeds 6.
Normal Summon Limit
You can only Normal Summon OR Normal Set once per turn. Special Summons (from Spells, effects, etc.) are unlimited. This is why combo decks lean heavily on cards that enable free Special Summons — the single Normal Summon is a precious resource.
Summoning Methods
Normal Summon
Placing a Level 1–4 monster directly from your hand to the field in Attack or Defense Position. Costs your one Normal Summon for the turn.
Tribute Summon
For Level 5–6 monsters: Tribute (send to the GY) one monster you control. For Level 7+ monsters: Tribute two monsters. This represents the high-level powerful monsters in the game — they're worth the cost.
Special Summon
Any summon not done by Normal or Ritual methods. Includes:
Fusion Summon: Use Polymerization to fuse listed Fusion Materials from hand/field. The Fusion Monster is summoned from the Extra Deck.
Synchro Summon: Send a Tuner monster + one or more non-Tuner monsters to the GY whose total Levels equal the Synchro Monster's Level.
Xyz Summon: Stack two or more monsters of the same Level. The Xyz Monster (which has Ranks, not Levels) is placed on top. Materials are attached to it and detached to pay for its effects.
Link Summon: Send specific monsters to the GY as listed by the Link Monster's requirements. Link Monsters have Link Arrows that point to zones — those zones become available for Extra Deck summons.
Ritual Summon: Use a Ritual Spell card, Tribute monsters from hand/field matching the Ritual Monster's Level.
The Battle Phase
This is where damage is dealt and monsters are destroyed. Understanding Battle Phase rules prevents costly mistakes.
Start Step: Enter the Battle Phase. Both players can activate cards.
Battle Step: Declare an attacker and a target.
Attacking a face-down monster: Flip it face-up (Flip effects trigger), then compare ATK vs DEF.
Attacking a face-up monster in Attack Position: ATK vs ATK. Lower ATK monster is destroyed; if equal, both are destroyed.
Attacking a face-up monster in Defense Position: ATK vs DEF. If ATK > DEF, monster is destroyed (but no damage to the player). If ATK < DEF, attacker takes the difference as damage (Piercing effects ignore this).
Direct Attack: If your opponent controls no monsters, you can attack them directly with any monster — they take the monster's ATK as damage.
Damage Step: Damage is calculated. Limited card activations allowed here (damage step cards only).
End Step: Resolve any end-of-battle effects.
How to Win
Reduce LP to 0: Both players start with 8,000 Life Points. Reduce your opponent's to 0 and win. Damage comes from direct attacks and card effects.
Deck Out: If your opponent cannot draw a card when required, you win.
Special Win Conditions: Some cards have alternate win conditions (e.g., Exodia the Forbidden One — gather all 5 pieces in hand to instantly win).
Deck Rules and Limits
Main Deck: 40–60 cards (40 is almost always optimal — thinner deck = more consistent draws)
Extra Deck: 0–15 Fusion/Synchro/Xyz/Link Monsters
Side Deck: 0–15 cards (swapped in between games in a match)
Card Limits: Maximum 3 copies of any one card in the combined Main + Side Deck. Certain powerful cards are Limited (1 copy max) or Semi-Limited (2 copies max) by the Forbidden & Limited List (the "Banlist"). Forbidden cards cannot be used at all.
Starter 40-Card Warrior Deck
Warriors are one of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s oldest and most supported Types. This deck uses straightforward Normal and Tribute Summons to build a board, backed by classic Spell and Trap support.

Playing This Deck
Start by getting Marauding Captain out — it Special Summons another Warrior from your hand when Normal Summoned. Use Reinforcement of the Army to always have a Warrior in hand. Save Mirror Force for when your opponent swings with their best monsters. Gilford the Lightning requires 3 Tributes but destroys everything — a game-winning play if you're behind on board.
